Sažetak
Geometric morphometrics (GM) has been widely applied in studying different organisms, and it proved itself as a powerful method in discriminating different stocks, populations or groups of organisms. Up till now, in the freshwater crayfish research, GM has been used only in the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes). The aim of this research was to use GM approach with the intention to discriminate noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) stocks in Croatia. It is known that hybrids between these two species have been produced in laboratory conditions, and their existence in natural habitats has been mentioned in literature. Therefore, another aim of our study was to uncover possible appearance of hybrids in open waters by GM application. Morphometric characterisation (three traits per crayfish) of three crayfish populations (A. astacus, A. leptodactylus and one population with individuals whose determination was indecisive in terms of species) from the Mrežnica River was undertaken. Additional specimens of both species, from other localities across Croatia, with undisputable species determination, were included. To get more robust results, analyses were expanded to include stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium), white- clawed crayfish (A. pallipes) and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). The results confirmed potential of GM method application to complement the genetic characterisation of crayfish populations.
