Sažetak
AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate whether food enriched with selenium (Se) and/or zinc (Zn)can effect serum oxidative stress in male rats. METHODS: 4-weeks old male Sprague- Dawley were divided inti 3 groups:control group fed with low- Se/low-Zn wheat ; rats fed with high Se/low- Zn wheat ; and group fed with high-Zn/low-Se. After 10 weeks rats were sacrified for serum collection followed by measurement of Ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS ; reaction of malonilaldehyde (MDA) with thiobarbituric acid) and serum glutation peroxidase 1 (GPX1)). RESULTS: 10 weeks of feeding with food enriched with Se and Zn did not cause any significant changes in FRAP or TBARS. nevertheless, GPX1 serum level was significantly lower in high-Zn/low-Se rats compared to controls and high-Zn/low-Se rats (P<0, 001). there was no dofference between control and high-Se/low-Zn rats. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that serum antioxidative capacity has not been affected by changesin Se/Zn food content, however, the level GPX1 was significantly increased in rats fed with Se enriched food, suggesting that changes in Se intake can affect GPX1 levels in the blood.
