Sažetak
Animal health and food security issues are pointed as very important ones in new EU Common agricultural policy. That is not surprising since we are recently bombarded with outbreaks of various diseases common to animals and humans. Since live animals and their products could be a source of threat to human health, animal feed safety, animal health care and animal products safety control mechanisms are combined in Veterinary Public Health concept. Core domains of VPH, as defined in Teramo in 1999, are: diagnosis, surveillance, epidemiology, control, prevention and elimination of zoonoses ; food protection ; management of health aspects of laboratory animal facilities and diagnostic laboratories ; biomedical research ; health education and extension ; and production and control of biological products and medical devices. Other VPH core domains may include management of domestic and wild animal populations, protection of drinking-water and the environment, and management of public health emergencies. Veterinary sector is aware of before mentioned threats and everything is done to prevent possible outbreaks, nevertheless there are weak points to be considered and prevention measures developed. Considering before mentioned, conclusions of VET 2020 project are that Veterinary Public Health is a field of special attention in the future.
