Sažetak
The unique properties of clay and clay minerals made them valuable in the wide range of industrial applications. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bentonite quality on the mold mixture properties. Investigations were done with three types of bentonites with different origin. Research focused on structural and thermal changes of montmorillonite and their influence on mold mixture strength was discussed. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize samples. Laser diffraction was performed for particle size distribution analysis, while pore size distribution and specific surface area were determined by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) with energy dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) was used to get insight in the microstructure of bentonites and distribution of montmorillonite layers. Thermal stability was studied by simultaneous thermal analysis differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (STA DSC/TG). Compressive strength and wet tensile strength of mold mixtures were determined before and after calcination during 2 hours. Results show that thermal stability of bentonites jointly with montmorillonite content are key features that determine mold mixture quality. Investigations confirmed correlation between higher thermal stability and lower content of Fe2O3 in investigated samples. Higher montmorillonite content, better swelling behaviour of bentonites and higher temperatures of dehydroxylation process lead to better mechanical properties and higher tensile strength of mold mixtures.
