Trispecies hybrids; Pinus xvidakovićii (= Pinus sylvestris L. x (P. densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. x P. nigra Arnold); Pinus xkriebelii (= (P. nigra Arnold x P. sylvestris L.) x P. densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.); Pinus xhagmanii (= (P. nigra Arnold x P. sylvestris
Sažetak
Three trispecies hybrid pines are described: 1. Pinus xvidakovićii (= Pinus sylvestris L. x (P. densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. x P. nigra Arnold), 2. Pinus xkriebelii (= (P. nigra Arnold x P. sylvestris L.) x P. densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.), 3. Pinus xhagmanii (= (P. nigra Arnold x P. sylvestris L.) x P. thunbergiana Franco). Those hybrids were produced by controlled hybridization, the first in 1962, the second and the third in 1985. The first hybrid (two trees) is planted in the park of the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb, the second (35 trees) and the third (8 trees) are planted together with some other hybrid families in the test plot trial in Lisičine Arboretum, located in the northern part of Croatia.
Nineteen morphological and anatomical characteristics of needles and shoots were analyzed. Discriminant analysis was used to investigate the possibility of identification and differentiation of the trispecies hybrids among themselves and from the parental species.
Based on analyzed characteristics, the P. xvidakovićii trispecies hybrid could be identified in 100% of cases. It could also be differentiated from the parental species (P. sylvestris, P. densiflora, P. nigra) and from the F1 hybrid P. densiflora x P. nigra. The latter was used as a pollen donor when the trispecies hybrid was produced. The P. xkriebelii hybrid was also successfully differentiated from the parental species (P. nigra, P. sylvestris, P. densiflora), but when compared with the F1 hybrid P. nigra x P. sylvestris, which was used as the mother plant for the trispecies hybrid, misidentification occurred in 12 % of cases. P. xhagmanii could be identified in 100 % of cases when compared with P. sylvestris and P. thunbergiana, but in 5 % of cases the trispecies was misidentified when compared with P. nigra and in 10 % of cases when compared with the F1 mother plant hybrid P. nigra x P. sylvestris.
Identification of each trispecies hybrid was 100 % accurate when P. xvidakovićii and P. xhagmanii were compared with the other two trispecies hybrids. When trispecies hybrid P. xkriebelii was compared with the other two trispecies hybrids, in 2.4 % of cases they were misidentified as P. xvidakovićii and as P. xhagmanii.
