Sažetak
Due to the fact that enjoying in wine was rather common way of spending leisure time in medieval urban societies, as well as that the production and the selling of wine, including the serving of it in public inns, were rather important branch of the economy of medieval cities, it is not surprising that the communal authorities tried to intervene with their regulations in order to make same rules in wine connected activities. Therefore, the medieval communal statutes are rather good source to research various issues connected with trade and the consuming wine in medieval cities, in this case medieval cities situated on the east coast of the Adriatic. So, in this paper several issues connected with the trade and the consuming of wine in medieval Dalmatian towns are argued. Firstly, the origin, structure and importance of the medieval statutes of Dalmatian towns are depicted. Secondly, the statutory regulations concerning the import of the wine in medieval commune, and how the communal authorities try to protect domestic wine production, are analyzed. In this section the general prohibition of the import the wine of foreign origin, as well as the exception of this general law, are argued. Also, in this section it is discussed what was considered to be domestic wine, and was there any prohibition of the transport and storage of foreign wine. Thirdly, the rules concerning the export of the domestic wine are analyzed. Fourthly, the general statutory regulations on selling and serving wine within city walls, are analyzed ; how was the selling of wine controlled, as well as the quality of wine insured. Furthermore, some issues connected with the serving of wine in public inns are discussed. Therefore, in this section the statutory regulations on selling wine in public inns, as well the opening hours of public inns are argued. Even more, who had the right of keeping wine outside of the city walls, and what were the positions of inn-keepers in the urban society, is discussed. Finally, it is argued that the wine had special place in everyday life as the instrument of payment. Hence, it is analyzed in which occasion the wine was the instrument of payment, and in which it was the formal gift.
