Sažetak
Bone metabolism of Simmental calves in the neonatal period was investigated by monitoring of biochemical indicators in the blood. Investigations were carried out on 9 calves held together with their mothers and fed only on their mother’s milk. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein 6, 12, 48 hours and 7 and 14 days after birth. Serum concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium and activity of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) were determined. Serum concentrations of PTH 6 hours after birth were significantly higher compared with that 7 days after birth (p<0.05) and 12 hours after birth compared with the 7 and 14 days after birth (p<0.05). The highest activity of BALP in calves serum was recorded 7 days after birth, the lowest activity of BALP were recorded 48 hours after birth and differed significantly from the values recorded in all other sampling times (p<0.05). Serum concentration of calcium was significantly higher 14 days after birth compared with that 48 hours after birth (p <0.05). In calves, negative correlations were observed between serum activities of BALP and calcium concentrations 6 and 12 hours after birth (r=-0, 683, r=-0.714, p<0.05, respectively). The changes observed in calves serum indicate that the bone metabolism of calves in the neonatal period is very intense and directed on the synthesis of bone tissue.
