Sažetak
If one quarter of our life consists of dreams, and adding to that our daydreams and reveries, we can conclude that man is quite a dream-creature, and that he spends most of his life dreaming or musing. This paper, nevertheless, deals with a more fundamental interpretation of the dream’s role, moreover, daydream’s role in people’s lives and its essential determinant, which is called hope. Dream is something which has been studied since the beginning of civilization, each culture assigning it its own meaning, symbolism and interpreting it through its own cultural paradigms. Dream came down from heaven to Earth only with Aristotle who describes it purely as a reality and a consequence of human activity, and not as an inspiration and deity’s messages from the other world. That other world need not be celestial, and even during the interpretation of night dreams Freud himself detects that most night dreamers have feeling that their dreams are coming from the other world, some other reality because the dreams are complex, illogical at first sight, chaotic and as if they come from some other subject, because we (the dreamers) would never do such a thing awake and aware. However, dream is a process, as Jung said, in which the subject solely and almost exclusively dreams about himself and through himself ; and further than that he cannot go. What remains questionable in this matter is how good we know ourselves i.e. our own conscious and unconscious, as well as conscious and unconscious of the particular society and culture to which we belong. It is precisely the dream interpretation, night and daydreams respectively, the path which leads conscious and unconscious to higher levels and areas in which man can better accomplish himself. Dream is a process, which in night mode brings unconscious to the surface, mixes our moods in its own combinations, fear with happiness, sorrow with pleasure ; worries which preoccupied us the previous days dream either emphasizes or dissolves, it is a process which extracts strength from the waking state, which is the treasure of the experienced. However, daydream is a process which trains new experiences, it brings a treasure of that which is not-yet experienced. Although Freud nowhere excludes that night dream has also the characteristics connected to the future he considers it a purely retrograde process, a spiritual act that reveals to us uncensored processes of our consciousness. Future, according to Freud, in night dreams doesn’t exist, i.e. it is the future covered up with day fantasies, present or past unrealized wishes so that it is a more transformed past, which shows itself in dreams as present. According to Bloch, the future is the crucial moment of daydream. Therefore, when we talk about day and night dreams we must know that we are dealing with two different psychical localities.
