Sažetak
The paper deals with the concept of multilingualism as a symbol of cultural heterogeneity and a reflection of a common European identity based on the idea of unity in diversity. The author points to the problem of a one-dimensional approach as shown in the preference of the languages of “Core Europe” at international events, while at the same time the languages spoken in (Central) Eastern Europe are neglected. We wish to point to the complexity of the question of a common European identity and plead for a more reflective and consistent approach to the idea of multilingualism by suggesting the inclusion of at least one Slavic language at European scientific and diplomatic conferences. This would present a step toward an integrative European identity.
