Textbook of Emergency Medicine
Sažetak
In the emergency department (ED), with every single patient the physician faces two challenges: first, to diagnose the problem, and to stabilize the pateint's condition by the treatment necessary to provide immidiate relief of symptoms ; second, once upon the patient is evaluated and treated, to make the decision on who can be safely discharged home, and who needs to stay in hospital for futher evaluation and treatment. Sometimes this second decision seems obvious, sometimes it is a very shady area. Unnecessary hospitalizations contribute significantly to the immense expences of today's medical care. On the other hand, too early a discharge might have fatal consequences for the patient. This textbook has been conceived to help the physician in both aspects of ED decision making: how to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases, and how to decide who can safely go home and who has to be hospitalized.
