Sažetak
In this presentation the real life operation of ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ships) is presented from the point of view of a master. Ship handling has always been placed firmly in hands of the ships master. What of course makes the task of the ship handler so challenging is that many elements are not under his control but still have to be catered for, such as weather, current, wind effects, respective underkeel clearance, geographic obstructions with narrows, etc. The problems during exploitation of ULCS in everyday work are addressed, dealing with voyage management, crewing, and compliance, as well as giving navigational decision support for ships in operation. The difficulties are mainly related to port handling and sailing at heavy seas. The serious problems on ULCS, especially in port handling, due to strong wind loads are discussed. The ship handling research and training and simulator centers are very considerable in master training. They support masters to navigate and handle the ship more safely in various situations. In spite of all assistance of modern technology the role of ship master on ULCS is very important and handling such ship implies a lot of knowledge, experience and common sense.
