Sažetak
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in Croatian population due to inadequate food intake and sun exposure. This vitamin is important in maintaing bone strenght and muscular function, but there is some evidence about its role in the pathogenesis of other diseases like asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, thyreoidis etc. Epidemiological data and some minor randomized clinical trials supported the association between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease, including hypertension and coronary heart disease. Cardiovascular mortality was also increased in vitamin D deficient patients. Vitamin D deficiency and depression could also be associated according to some epidemiological reports, as well as cognitive impairment in elderly patients. However, further exploration of a possible causal relationship between vitamin D deficiency and extraskeletal diseases are necessary before any definitive conclusion.
