Sažetak
The most recent researches have directed attention to the oxidative theory of atherosclerosis. Important role in its initiation have free radicals being produced during physiological and pathological processes. The aim of the study was to determine total antioxidant status and activity of superoxid dismutase in patients with ischemic heart disease. Blood samples of 30 patients with ischemic heart disease (12 with angina pectoris and 18 with myocardial infarction) were analyzed 12, 36, 84 and 120 hours after the onset of disease. The TAS values and the SOD activities were measured at the same time with other markers of heart disease (CK, LD, CK-MB). The preliminary results showed that SOD activities in both groups of patients have been significantly lower compared to the control group of healthy volunteers (n=60, p<0.01 ) while the TAS values have been lower in patients with myocardial infarction being only measured 36 and 84 hours after the onset of the disease (p<0.05). During the monitoring in both groups the TAS and SOD activities (p <0.001) did not change significantly. Comparing the TAS and SOD values with CK, LD and CK-MB no significant correlation was found in patients with myocardial infarction. Marked decreases of antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD) suggest a possible drop in total antioxidant status of patients with ishemic heart disease and the necessary of determination the SOD activities to screen the main factors in atherosclerosis risk.
