Sažetak
Researches of protective and risk factors in the development of behavior disorders are more and more actual in the present time, which is full of different influences some of which could have negative effects considering the development of young people. Since the healthy and positive development of children and the youth depends on the balance which is obtained by the protective and risk factors, it is necessary to find out the ways of stimulating and enforcing the development of protective factors as well as the ways of neutralizing and inhibiting of risk factors.
This paper is dealing with the Model of developmental assets and protective factors developed by the researchers of The Search Institute - Minneapolis, USA (Leffert at all, 1997). The model has arisen as a result of many years of researching on the resilience in the children at risk, children who made it in spite of the firm reasons to expect differently. It is obvious that some protective factors had influence on the development of these children. On the top of the list of those protective factors are relationships that children have with competent, responsible and careful adults in a family, school and a community in which children grow up. Healthy community, oriented to the positive development of children and the youth, can be a strong base for the setting and realization of behavior disorders prevention programs.
This paper deals with the examination of differences that exist in the communities of different largeness (city, county centers, towns, and villages) regarding the development of the protective factors they are offering to the children and the youth. The research is held in the 7 towns of the Republic of Croatia, within the scientific project "Models of intervention with the purpose of prevention of the behavior disorders in children and the youth" that is led on the Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, University of Zagreb. 345 children and the youth between 11-14 age participated in the research.
By creating the environment oriented to the positive development of children that strengthens child's internal assets, it is possible to fight more effectively the risks the youth may become exposed to within a society. Such an environment can also help to reduce already existing risks to a minimum.
