Sažetak
Research on different autochthonous and alochtonous trees species wood production begun in the scope of Croatian Forest Research Institute activities around 1960-s. This paper encompasses research results of three autochthonous and alochtonous conifer species wood production on permanent trial plots in Croatia. Those trial plots were established in three ecologically different regions of Croatia. Wood production potential increases with increase of suitable areas for forest plantation and culture establishment. There is currently around 350 000 ha of available forest and non-forest areas which are suitable for forest production. If we add to this figure new estimate of abandoned agricultural land, we come to the amount of cca 0, 5 millions ha of areas suitable for controlled forest production. Those areas present significant potential for wood production in Croatia. Production optimum depends not only on site quality, but also on appropriate specie selection together with optimal rotation period. Which species would be chosen should be finally determined on the basis of insight into the conditions of desired afforestation area, in accordance with biological properties, ecological requirements and production potential of individual tree species. This paper presents research results on different conifer tree species wood production (Picea abies (L.) Karst., Pinus nigra Arnold., Pinus sylvestris (L.) Karst, Larix decidua Mill., Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco., Pinus strobus Mill.) in comparative trials in Croatia. This paper also presents adaptive ability of mentioned species in different bioclimates of Croatia. According to those results Norway spruce showed immense adaptive ability and significant wood production out of all investigated autochthonous tree species, while Weymouth pine showed similar results among all investigated alochtonous specie.
