Sažetak
The chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger) is a member of the rodent family, native in the Andes, and raised as a ranch animal worldwide for the production of fur. One of the most serious problems in chinchilla industry is "fur-chewing". Generally, it develops in both genders at the age of 6-8 months. "Fur-chewing" occurs when a chinchilla bites off areas of its own or some other animals fur. According to literature, as many oas 30% of chinchillas have a fur-chewing habit. In chinchilla farms in Croatia an incidence of 15-20% has been observed. Concerning permanent and/or repeated episodes of "fur-chewing" with subsequent incomplete fur recovering and great losses in chinchilla industry, a pathomorphological, microbiological and parasitological investigation was done. Histopatology of the skin and adrenal glands showed changes typical of hyperadrenocorticism.
