Adolescence is considered to be a critical period in life due to the numerous and frequent changes that take place in one person when passing through this phase, hence a critical period for the psychological development of one’s self. The attitudes of adolescents move in different dimensions. The purpose of our study is to determine whether there are differences in the self concept between overweight and average-weight adolescents. The sample used in our study consists of 80 high school female students aged 18 (fourth grade). The trial group comprised 40 students with BMI > 25. The control group comprised 40 students with BMI between 18 and 25. We evaluated their self concept using the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire for Adolescents (OSIQ), thought to measure descriptive aspects of the self image of adolescents aged between 13 and 19 years, on a scale for female adolescents. We used descriptive statistical methods, like the median and standard deviation, to analyze the data we recorded, and the T-test to reveal differences among groups. To test the difference’s import, we set the p level to <0.05. We compared the results of trial and control groups on each singular scale. We recorded statistically significant differences between the two groups on two scales: on the SxS – sexual attitudes (p=0.44) and on the CS-2-psychopathology scale (p=0.02). According to our results, overweight adolescents are less comfortable with their sexual attitudes and show more signs of psychopathology than their average-weight peers.
