Sažetak
The nutritional effect on the short-term exercise-induced increase of blood viscosity in insulin-dependent diabetic (IDDM) patients is not well understood. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of water intake on hemorheologic responses to submaximal exercise in IDDM patients. Six IDDM subjects without complications (18-23 yr.; HbA1c 5.3-13.2) performed a 15 min bicycle exercise at 60-85 theoretical maximal heart rate, after eating a standardized breakfast and receiving their usual insulin dose (I). The test was repeated with additional water intake (250ml), 2 weeks later (II). Whole blood filterability (WBF), washed erythrocyte filterability (EF). Hct, plasma viscosity (PV), fibrinogen (Fb) and blood glucose (BG) were determined 15 min before, at 20 during and 35 min after the test. Compared to the pre-exercise values:18.27+7.54 (I), and 18.65+2.37 (II), the WBF (ul/sec) significantly decreased (p 0.05) during and after exercise in both protocols: 14.33+8.09; 10.93+8.20 (I) and 14.33+3.59; 12.30+5.05 (II). Significant increase (p 0.05) of Hct during exercise was observed only in I. Changes of EF and Fb did not attain statistical significance. PV was slightly increased in II, but decreased after exercise in both protocols. BG significantly decreased during and after exercise in both protocols. These results demonstrate that water intake with standardized breakfast and insulin administration does not improve submaximal exercise-induced decrease of whole blood filterability in IDDM subjects.
