Sažetak
The Jakuševec Landfill is located in the eastern part of Zagreb, on an aquifer which is essential for the city water supply. Two well fields important for water supply are located downstream from Jakuševec. It is estimated that about 8.000.000 m3 of waste had been dumped on the landfill by 2000. Remediation project to convert the dump into a sanitary landfill implemented during the nineties was completed in 2003. Thirty-two observation wells (piezometers) have been installed for monitoring of the landfill impact on the groundwater quality and water sampling four times a year. Upon completion of the remediation, the water quality monitoring was continued on six observation wells located downstream from the landfill. The present paper aims at determining how successful was the remediation using the groundwater quality analysis. The analysis focuses on manganese, iron and arsenic content trends in the underground in the period between 1995 and late 2010. The highest values that exceed 30, 000 µg/l, 1, 000, 000 µg/l and 2, 500 µg/l of manganese, iron and arsenic, respectively, were recorded during the last three years. Since an average measured groundwater flow rate in the area is 3.42 m/day, and the furthest observation well is located 450 m from the landfill, the contamination front should have passed by the observation well site long time ago. The obtained results, however, indicate extreme concentrations of iron, manganese and arsenic without any tendency of decrease with time, which leads to the conclusion that the landfill remediation was not successful.
