Sažetak
During February 2012 cold weather, intensive precipitation, especially snow and gale force wind disturbed traffic and deteriorated living conditions in Croatia, especially in the southern part. Temperatures below freezing were recorded as far south as Lastovo and Dubrovnik, with minimum temperatures reaching -9.9 in Senj, -8.9 on Zadar Airport and Porec. Snow fall was observed in Dubrovnik, Hvar, Lastovo and Korcula. The layer of snow measured in Kuna on Peljesas peninsula reached 57cm on 13th February while the level reached 1 meter in Metkovic. Snow fall was observed almost continuously, but did not accumulate on ground in many places due to gale force wind. The number of days with snow on ground reached 19 in Ploce, 17 in Sibenik and 16 in Split, with parts covered for the whole month. The maximum wind gust was 61 m/s and the maximum sustained wind was 31.7m/s measured in the vicinity of Krk bridge. On Jasenice station, average 10 minute wind speed of 37 m/s and the maximum gust of 60.8m/s was measured on 7th February 2012. Wind strength reached 9 Beaufort in Dubrovnik Airport, Makarska, Senj and Zadar Airport, while Palagruza reported 12 Bf on several occasions. The period was characterized with an anticyclone above Finland and Russia reaching Croatia and low pressure above the Mediterranean. Cyclone resided above Tyrrhenian sea from 1st to 4th February, then another forms of Libya and moves to Ionian Sea from 6th to 8th February, the third cyclone formed in Genoa Bay and moved southeastward from 10th to 12th February. Finally the anticyclone weakens as a polar low moves from Norwegian sea over Scandinavia on 14th southeast towards the Black Sea on 16th. The last event has finally allowed bura to weaken. The operational forecast of Aladin Croatia uses 3Dvar data assimilation in 8km resolution. The forecast is further dynamically downscaled to 2km resolution. The performance of the operational model forecast is presented and evaluated. The model forecast performed rather well with local phenomena, but not for the absence of bura and snow in Makarska, while the surrounding regions of Split and Ploce measured record levels of snow.
