Sažetak
Pregnancy is characterised by numerous metabolic adaptations which differ between obese and normal-weight pregnant women. Obese pregnant women are under increased metabolic stress which can lead to a number of disorders and complications during and after the pregnancy. The purpose of the article is to update the knowledge on possible effects of intrauterine metabolic environment on the child's health, especially related to obesity and metabolic syndrome. A comprehensive database search was performed during April, 2012 with the purpose of finding articles on effects of intrauterine metabolic environment with emphasis on obesity in pregnancy. Children born from these pregnancies have higher risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Thus, a spread of health related problems across generations is observed. Risks could be prevented with public health interventions, like proper nutrition and regular physical activity, targeted to women of reproductive age and children of obese and diabetic mothers. Epidemic of obesity in the modern world emphasises the need for fast development and implementation of interventions to prevent obesity and obesity-related health problems.
