Sažetak
Applying new energy policy that encourages use of renewable energy sources wood is becoming more important in Croatia. Manufacturers in the wood industry increasingly are faced with demands for FSC certificate as a condition for sale on foreign markets. Therefore, the number of FSC CoC certificates continuously increases. Low demand for FSC certificate on the Croatian market is an indicator that Croatian consumers have not recognized the importance of sustainable development and forest certification yet. Two worldwide known forests certification systems are: Forest Stewardship Council – FSC and The Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification – PEFC, formerly known as the Pan – European Forest Certification. In the last two years the PEFC scheme has emerged and has grown with much rapidity. Nowadays PEFC manages a greater area of certified forest than FSC. Currently 2 million hectares of forests in Croatia are FSC certified and are carried out mostly by Hrvatske šume Ltd. (99, 5 %). There are no PEFC certificates for sustainable forest management in Croatia. Currently 180 companies are FSC CoC certificate holders for the production, processing and trade of wood products, and only one company is a PEFC CoC certificate holder. This paper is an overview of certification in Croatian wood processing and furniture manufacturing companies. The paper describes the requirements which are imposed on Croatian producers to meet certification standards, as well as the benefits of certification.
