Sažetak
The first lecture of the Department of Art History and Archeology at the University of Zagreb, delivered by Izidor Kršnjavi on March 11, 1878, marked the end of an effort of several years to establish the art history studies in Croatia. Crucial to the founding of the Art History Department was the support of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. However, a fuller picture of the mechasisms by which culture was institutionalized in Croatia in the second half of the 19th century can be attained by looking at particular projects not as individual endeavours, but rather as interdependent parts of a network of ideas. In the case we are examining here, we furthermore highlight the importance of certain, up to now neglected, thinkers both to providing the initial impetus to establish a Department of Art History in Zagreb, and also mapping out the stages of its implementation. We interpret Strossmayer not so much as individual-ideator, but rather as a control mechanism in possession of the means to implement projects, that is, as an institution per se.
