Sažetak
The great majority of marine protected areas in the eastern Adriatic Sea fail to meet their management objectives. Many common, but declining species could benefit from protected areas, but sometimes this is not a rule. At the community level, the goal of this study was to assess the average proportions of the most severe long-term declining of commercial species inside and outside protected areas as well as their temporal stability. Several species, which are mostly dependent on human activities, exhibited a negative long-term trend. In this study long-term data (from 1997 to 2010) of commercial marine invertebrates (Corallium rubrum, Palinurus elephas) and fishes (Scorpaena scrofa, Epinephelus marginatus) assemblages in the National Park Kornati, National Park Mljet and Nature Park Telašćica, an areas closed or semi-closed to commercial fishing but open to form of recreational fishing (for inhabitants of protected areas), were compared with adjacent fished areas. Spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas), one of the most heavily targeted crab species in the region, showed no difference in abundance or size between the Marine Parks and adjacent control areas, all in negative trends. The data suggest fishing pressure within the Marine Parks is at least as high as at other ‘fished’ sites. On average, spiny lobster was up to twelve times more abundant in marine protected areas in 1997 than in 2010. In fact, the Marine Parks had the lowest mean numbers and sizes of studied populations of all areas, no- take or open to fishing. The lack of recovery of these targeted species within the Marine Parks, despite the exclusion of commercial fishers and restrictions on recreational fishing, indicates that populations were almost exterminated. The only recovery was indicated with groupers in National Park Mljet, after high restrictions.
