Sažetak
After extensive maintenance work that had been done on a stand-alone circular saw, a major change in the character of its sound has occurred, resulting in the reduction of sound pressure level by 6 decibels and changes in the spectrum of the sound. Motivated by the magnitude of the observed change, a sound quality evaluation was performed using a sound sample recorded before repair and five additional sound samples taken after repair for different operating conditions of the machine. The listeners were asked to evaluate the unpleasantness of sound and its appropriateness, and to give hints to the ways the sound should be changed, if at all. Based on the sound, they were also asked to evaluate the potential danger the machine represents, its robustness, power, overall quality and proper functioning and to make the same evaluation based on visual inspection of the machine. The values of objective parameters such as loudness, sharpness, roughness, etc. were gathered as well. The main results reveal significant differences in the perception of unpleasantness of sound and the robustness and power of the machine itself, as well as of the danger it represents. Significant differences also exist in the discrepancy between the evaluated properties of the machine based on visual inspection and the ones evaluated by listening to its sound. The gathered data will serve as the input to the sound design process with the purpose of creating an appropriate sound for the machine in question.
