Sažetak
In the peripartum period, goats are metabolically challenged as energy demands outstrip energy intake, and animals enter a state of negative energy balance. This triggers mainly catabolic pathways which increase the production of reactive oxygen metabolites which may lead to development of oxidative stress that in turn can result in disease and reproductive problems The aim of this study was to investigate oxidative/antioxidative status of high yielding milk goats according to their parity. Saanen goats of different parity (n=40) were divided in two groups: primiparous (n=20) and multiparous (n=20). Blood samples were obtained on days 10 and 3 prepartum and 3, 14 and 28 postpartum. Serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxid dismutase (SOD) activities were determined. Indicator of lipid peroxidation, considered to represent oxidative stress, MDA (malondialdehyde) was also measured. GSH-Px activity in primiparous goats was significantly lower (P<0.01) than in multiparous on 3 days prepartum. Serum SOD activity showed no significant difference between groups according to parity, but we found its opposite trends in two groups throughout the whole research. MDA concentrations in primiparous goats were significantly lower (P<0.01) than in multiparous throughout the whole research. Differences in SOD/GSH-Px ratio, as well as MDA concentrations between groups indicate different response to oxidative challenges by goats of different parity during peripartum. Further research is needed to determine other factors affecting oxidative/antioxidative status.
