Sažetak
The paper addresses the transformations of Irene Adler, the female protagonist of A.C. Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes short story "A Scandal in Bohemia" (1891) in its recent fictional and filmic afterings. The focus is on the most recent rendition of Irene Adler in BBC’s TV series Sherlock from 2012 (series 2 episode 1), with reference to the use of the character by the same name in the two Guy Ritchie films, Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), with some reference to the arguably neo- Victorian mystery romp Goodnight, Mr Holmes by Carole Nelson Douglas (1990). The paper analyses the perceivable deterioration of Adler's agency combined with her overt sexualization in the filmic adaptations. Such afterings of this only female and one of the few characters that outwitted the legendarily astute detective are analysed in the light of perceivable (and seemingly unwavering) postfeminist trends in mainstream and big budget TV and film adaptations of 19th century classics.
