Sažetak
This paper describes the relationship between SWB and Big-Five personality factors on a large representative sample of Croatina citizens divided into 6 age groups. It is now well established fact that personality and SWB correlate moderately to strongly. However the mechanisms that link personality to SWB are still not fully understood. We hypothesized that personality affects SWB in two ways, firstly by providing dispositional basis of positive/negative affect and secondly by enabling better or worse coping mechanisms in various life situations. The latter hypothesis implies that the pattern of correlations would not be the same for distinct age groups because of different life situations they are facing. We used Satisfaction with life scale (Diener et al., 1985) as a cognitive measure of SWB and Happiness measure form the Fordyce (1988) scale and Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) (Cummins, 2002) as affective measures. The IPIP15 is a short version of the International Personality Item Pool, cross-cultural instrument targeted to measure the Big-Five domains. The results confirm earlier findings that Extraversion and Emotional stability have the highest correlations with SWB. While not contributing the SWB in youth, Intellect showed strongest correlation with SWB after 50, while Agreeableness tends to be correlated only within the youngest and the oldest category.
