Sažetak
With the pilot study of the proposed project, three aims were planned to be achieved. The major focus is on the validation of a measure of national identity developed in Croatia (Corkalo & Kamenov, 1999) in three other countries experiencing different degrees of ethnopolitical conflict, namely Northern Ireland, Spain and Sri Lanka. Secondly, authors want to analyse the relationship between national identity, social distance and perceived social norms in relation to social distance. Thirdly, it is proposed to examine the relationships between these concepts as they are embedded in the specific political culture of each country.
This project is considered as a pilot study providing important and necessary data for future research. As a future goal, we propose in particular to integrate social identity theory and social representation theory regarding strategies to cope with threatened national identities. It is our intention to extract first indicators for shared issues for all four countries from the Political Culture Questionnaire. This will make it possible for subsequent research to take these results into account in order to conduct focus groups and further statistical analyses to investigate constructions of social representations in terms of national identity and coping strategies. For this goal, the proposed project will provide essential information and the necessary research methods required to undertake a cross-cultural research in all four countries under investigation.
