Sažetak
Protozoan parasites from genus Trypanosoma are worldwide distributed, causing in some places of the world very serious problems in humans and animals as well. In Croatia, until couple of years ago, there was no written proof about their presence, but it seems they are here from ancient times, adopting on new conditions and evolving with their hosts. In 2004 first trypanosome was isolated from cattle, accidentally as a contaminant of blood used for microbiological cultures. One year after trypanosomes in sheep ked from sheep kept on organic farms were found. All the farms which had sheep keds, had the Trypanosoma melophagium as well. The only difference was the prevalence in sheep keds ranging up to more then 90%. A new finding of Trypanosomes in 2008 from deer proved that two isolates from ruminants isolated before are not the only ones. Finally, in 2009 trypanosomes in frog blood were found. All the frogs from all the locations in Croatia examined were positive, with trypanosomes in their bloodstream. The short history of isolation, morphological and molecular characterization of trypanosomes in Croatia was presented.
