Sažetak
In the year 2011, as a part of regular activities in 5 hunting grounds from Sisak-Moslavina and Vukovar-Srijem counties, blood samples of 26 golden jackals (Canis aureus) were submitted to laboratory The above mentioned hunting grounds are mostly located in the Nature Park Lonjsko Polje and Spačva forest, the largest integrated oak forest (Quercus robur L.) in this part of Europe. The significance of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is that throughout most of the year it is inhabited by various kinds of domestic (cattle, horses and pigs) and wildlife species. Spačva forest covers an area of approximately 40, 000 acres and includes two special protected forest reserves and two significant wetland areas. All sera were tested by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for the presence of 11 leptospiral antigens. An initial sera dilution 1:100 was considered as a cut-off point for a positive reaction. Positive reaction was detected in 4 (15.4%) bloods from 3 different hunting grounds. Three jackal bloods from two hunting grounds reacted positively to the sv. sejroe (1:100-1:500), and one blood from the third hunting ground reacted positively to the sv. tarassovi i sv. bataviae (1:100). This is the first monitoring of leptospirosis in golden jackals in the area of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park and Spačva forests. Regarding the nutritional characteristics of the golden jackals (small rodents and carrion), population density in these areas and relatively high capacity of large-distance migration, they should be considered as an important factor in the maintenance and expansion of leptospirosis in the ecosystem of the Nature Park Lonjsko Polje and Spačva forests.
