Sažetak
The subjects of this research are urban and architectural qualities of New Zagreb's interpolations tested on the example of Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist in Utrine, from the architects Andrej Uchytil and Renata Waldgoni (1991– 2008). New Zagreb's CIAM grid - which was planned in the 1960's - in this paper is being considered as a base upon which new generation of interpolated buildings are recognizable. Features of this matrix are its grand scale and ‘generic’ approach, along with sufficient leftover space for smaller architectural interventions, which hybridize and complement the existing fabric, both in scale and content. It were these characteristics of the matrix, that are its indicators of quality and demonstrators that not only residential architecture can be accepted into its grid. Certain urban themes which have been tackled by this project - the possibility of parallel pedestrian corridor, southern to Dubrovnik Avenue (new pedestrian street with public facilities), square in front of the church which softens the grand scale of the settlement giving it a distinct scale, broken southern slab of the Parish Court which was done as a compromise to pedestrian quality - are seen as interpretations and critiques of the existing urbanism observed in a smaller scale of the church’s plot. Unlike the most religious objects which are carried out in other settlements (for example Travno, Slobostina, Sopot), this specific intervention, positions itself on the established walking paths and additionally affirms them. Other facilities in the same line with Dubrovnik Avenue and close to the Federal Republic of Germany Street (HG Spot, HAK, Microsoft and Dell commercial buildings) proceed in a manner of occupying exclusively their own parcel, rather filling out their location, without delivering any quality to the area which they accommodate. These research findings could be used as an example for studying the rest of New Zagreb's settlements and their potential for accepting new architectural interventions.
