Sažetak
Croatian islands are the most attractive and suitable areas for application of new tourist development models. The National development programme is very much in accordance with trends in global market. The future development should be based on “sustainable development”. “Sustainable development” is such a development that does not jeopardise the progress of future generations, preserves the natural resources and meets the needs of the local community. The accent of islands development should be put on quality of service, not just on quantity (i.e. number of tourists). To meet the growing demand of its visitors, Croatian islands need to establish cluster – based development. We think that nautical tourism is essentially important for islands in combination with presentation of historical and cultural heritage of islands, entertainment, exploring the sea bottom, development of Eco-villages and so on. Mljet is one of the most beautiful Croatian islands with extraordinary natural beauties, which were the reason why the western part of the island became the National Park in 1960. In this paper the main development factors of Mljet will be presented. Development directions will be given on the basis of SWOT analyses and could be applied to other similar Croatian islands.
