Sažetak
Chlamydia trachomatis is an important urogenital and ocular pathogen in men: serovars D-K cause very common bacterial sexually transmitted infections, while the L serovars cause lymphogranuloma venereum. C.trachomatis infection cause a wide range of genital symptoms and signs, but ocular infection are also possible in men, women and children. The genital infections are often asymptomatic and infection of the conjunctiva in adults are mostly caused by autoinoculation. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of C.trachomatis in genital and ocular clinical samples during the period 1992-1999 in Rijeka region.
Methods: the study was performed on three different groups of patients: the first group included females seen at the outpatient's because of genital tract infections, miscarriage or infertility; the second group included males with non gonococcal urethritis, prostatitis, infertility, Reiter's syndrome and partner control; the third group included adults or children with conjunctivitis. Patients treated before enrollment with antibiotics were excluded. Urethral, endocervical and ocular specimens were tested for the presence of C.trachomatis using monoclonal antibodies (Chlamyset-Orion).
Results: a total of 6.447 patients were seen during the period 1992-1999. 21.8% of them was found to have C.trachomatis in the specimens. In the first group C.trachomatis was detected in 20.2% of the women, 27.9% in the males, and in the smears of the conjunctiva in 20.7%.
Conclusion: the percentage rate of C.trachomatis isolate in genital samples was higher in males, while in ocular smears the bacteria was detected in the same percentage in both sexes.
