Sažetak
Objective: the aim of this paper was to investigate whether children with the ADHD syndrome in the clinical sample of the Child Protection Center of Zagreb, whose parents had either been divorced or divorcing, were more often exposed to corporal punishment, neglect, or any type of abuse, than children with the ADHD syndrome in intact families. Method: Out of total clinical sample (N=5077) diagnosed in the Center, an institutional specialized for psycho-traumatized children, 5, 8%of children had ADHD (N=293), the majority of them being boys (81, 9%). Data analysis showed no differences in the exposure to corporal punishment, abuse and neglect between children with the ADHD syndrome and other children in the clinical sample, while children with ADHD had statistically less often experienced emotional and sexual abuse than other children. Results: There were no differences found in the frequency of corporal punishment, abuse, sexual abuse and neglect between children diagnosed with the ADHD syndrome regarding divorce. Children with ADHD whose parents had divorced or were divorcing were more often exposed ti emotional abuse than those in intact families, girls having more often been neglected than boys. However, differences related to gender were not found regarding the frequency of any type of abuse. Conclusion: Divorce itself being traumatic experience for both the child and the parents and definitely shattering the existing family dynamics, it was not confirmed as a risk factor for emotional abuse of children with the ADHD syndrome. The limitations of this research conducted on the clinical sample of children having been diagnosed and treated in an institution specialized for psycho-traumatized children, do not enable making conclusions about general population. However, the obtained results can help in further clinical work with children with similar difficulties.
