Sažetak
The recent developments of the European language policy and language educational policy shaped by the Council of Europe and the European Union as well as the ongoing language teaching research stress the significance of effective dissemination of multilingualism and plurilingual skills through language education. Language instructors, i.e. professionals who in the educational construct are closest to language learners, are realistically responsible for the end result of executing European strategies. Therefore, it is their preparation and attitudes that need to be recognized as essential when it comes to shaping the learners’ plurilingual competence and, to a great extent, maintaining linguistic diversity in Europe. The aim of this paper is to examine whether EFL teacher trainees are aware of European tools, programmes, educational strategies and are willing to promote plurilingual skills through their teaching practice as well as develop their own linguistic skills. A questionnaire has been administered to eighty TEFL students at the MA level in Poland and Croatia, an EU and a candidate country, respectively. Given the decisive role of prospective teachers, we believe that our research will provide a basis on which the existing training programmes may be complemented by additional workshops to promote plurilingualism and multilingualism in Europe.
