Sažetak
Species diversity of ciliates, their population density, trophic structure and biomass were studied on glass slides placed in the epilimnion (1 m), metalimnion (9 m) and hypolimnion (18 m) in the karstic barrage Visovac Lake located in the NW Dinarid area, Croatia. After one-month exposure periods, ciliate biomass was significantly decreased with depth (in the epilimnion 54 μg/cm2, in the metalimnion 37 μg/cm2 and in the hypolimnion 28 μg/cm2). Species diversity of ciliates was greatest in the metalimnion. Considering the trophic structure, omnivorous ciliates were dominant in the epilimnion, whereas in the metalimnion and hypolimnion bacterivores and carnivores were the most abundant. The overall mean values of population density were relatively uniform (675 Ind./cm2 in the epilimnion, 592 Ind./cm2 in the metalimnion, and 678 Ind./cm2 in the hypolimnion). Sessile forms (peritrichs and suctorians) were dominant. These community parameters correlated with the vertical gradient of oxygen, carbon dioxide, food availability and tufa deposit. During the study period, from May 1995 to February 1996, ciliates inhabiting artificial substrates in the epilimnion had two temporal peaks of density and biomass: in June and in October. In the deeper layers these maxima appeared one or two months later. In the metalimnion and hypolimnion the first maximum was in July. In the metalimnion the second maximum was in November, and in the hypolimnion in December.
