Sažetak
Rising international trade, capital flows and foreign direct investment, faster and easier moving of people, increasing international technology transfer and faster global exchange of information are some of the characteristics of the world economy at the beginning of 21st century. The main scope of each policy maker is the economic growth and development of its country, which must bring about an improvement in well being of inhabitants. Globalisation has reduced the economic autonomy and the role of the State and has moved companies to the centre stage. For faster economic growth and development it is necessary the higher nation's competitiveness level. Competitiveness presents the ability to meet customer's needs and the ability to meet the test of free market. Tourism is a very important sector in Croatian economy. It is the most important part of the service sector and significant items of balance of payment. In the second part of eighties the number of tourist arrival was decreasing and these trends were only stronger during the war years. For Croatia, as an Mediterranean country, it will be very difficult gain back the position it had on European touristic market before the war without new investments and increase of quality of her product and whole offer. This paper is analyses the main reasons of that situation and authors represent the solution of prosperity and long-term development of tourism and its role in country's development.
