Sažetak
The influence of language, customs and tradition as fundamental elements of a culture plays an important role in understanding traits of one's own and others' cultures, as well as in promoting values of cultural diversity. One of the basic functions of culture is communication with the environment, which is performed by means of language. The language of home and family has a direct influence on learning the language of one's social environment. The District of Istria is a bilingual milieu in which the Italian minority has a legal right of education in the Italian language. Croatian is taught, in Italian primary schools, from the first form onwards, four hours per week, in accordance with the Primary School Curriculum. Spelling and grammar are acquired in two fields: speaking/writing and grammar ; and additionally, in the segment of Literature and Culture of the media. In this paper the most common Croatian language errors which fourth and eighth form students tend to make are analysed. The results of the research are studied within the context of the native language and the language of education, because nowadays, Italian classes are more and more frequently attended by students of other nationalities as well.
