Sažetak
Purpose: Creation of a natural dental appearance has become an important task in all fields of dentistry, especially in prosthodontics. Therefore, it is important for prosthodontist to determine the patients esthetic expectations prior to beginning treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine how dental and facial measurements explain the variability of the patients satisfaction with the appearance of their maxillary anterior teeth with the respect to gender. Methods& Materials: A total of 120 healthy patients (39 males, 81 females ; average age of 22.5 years) participated in the study. The inclusion patient criteria were absence of periodontal disease, gingival recession, gingival hypertrophy, loss of interdental papillae, spacing, crowding, existing restorations or dental wear on maxillary anterior teeth, prior traumatic injury or orthodontic treatment. The following measurements were performed: width and length of each maxillary anterior tooth, their distal gingival zenith displacements, the upper lip and nose height, intercommisural, interchantal and interallar width, maximum maxillary central incisal and gingival display at rest and smile and the lengths of the facial thirds. All the patientsscored the level of their satisfaction with the dental appearance on the visual-analogue scale. Results: All the dental and facial measurements were in men (p<0.05). The majority of the patients were completely satisfied with their dental appearance(82% of men and 67% of women p<0.05). The different combination of dental and facial measurements explained the variability of the patients satisfaction with the appearance of their maxillary anterior teeth by 75% in men and 42% in women. Conclusion: Men and women evaluate their dental appearance using different dental and facial parameters. Within the population tested, the results suggest that these parameters, together with other subjective and objective esthetic parameters, should be considered during the prosthodontic reconstruction.
