Sažetak
The present paper starts with a brief overview of historical conditions of the development of public health service in Croatia. As a milestone, the „ten points“ of public health advocated by Andrija Štampar in the 1920s are stressed. Statistics follows, presenting the current situation of Croatian public health and medicine. Legal documents underlying healthcare are listed and some comments of the most important Health Protection Law (2008). The basic ideas and efforts of the four healthcare service system reforms, launched within the last twenty years, are analysed, as well as the most perceived problems of modern Croatian healthcare service (difficulties in the education system and legislation, politization and commercialization of healthcare, and corruption in healthcare services). As a possible platform for future considerations, the Rijeka Appeal for a Rational and Ethical Healthcare Service is presented.
