Sažetak
European history of the 17th century was marked by wars: the Spanish War in the Netherlands, the Spanish-English conflict, the English Civil War, the Thirty Years War in which even Swedish and Finnish people were involved, the ambitious bellicose French Kingdom of Louis XIV, repetitive Habsburgs - Ottomans and Venetian-Ottoman wars... put this century alongside the 20th century which is known as the most bloodiest century of war. There was no country or peoples which were not affected by or included in some of the 17th century’s wars. Large numbers of people were involved in the events of war on a daily basis. Instead of working in manufactories, ploughing land or making shoes, they worked as professional soldiers, which meant that they were paid for their military service (as long as they managed to survive in battle!) and this was their main source of income. What attracted men to join army, (apart from the necessity of defending their own homes), how they did build their social and political status as soldiers, what happened with their families, widows and their children, what kind of social security they had in case of injury or old age, did army provide any pension, was war only a man’s job…? Those are the questions of a soldier’s life which are tackled in this article. Examples from the sources, which describe how Morlach warriors were gradually included into the Venetian military system during the Cretan and Morean War in Dalmatia (1645-1699), are taken here as an introduction to each discussion about the aspects of social and professional identity of early modern European soldiers. The status of Venetian professional soldiers and the Venetian social-military system is presented here as a starting point for a comparative study of the social status of professional soldiers in early modern Europe as well as other aspects of life during war.
