Sažetak
Geochemical atlas of Croatia resulted from the regional Topsoil geochemical survey based on the low-density (1 sample per 25 km2) soil sampling having covered the entire territory of the state. Samples include various soil types developed on both carbonate and siliciclastic bedrock and represent the topsoil material which is collected at 2521 locations from the upper 25 cm of the soil profile, cutting in most cases through the entire A-horizon and the upper part of B-horizon. The standard procedures for sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis in accordance with ISO 10381-1 protocols and recommendations were employed in preparation of the Atlas. Basically, the collection of geochemical maps showing the geographic distribution of the set of elements with particular emphasis on possibly harmful elements (PHE) was focused on elucidation of environmental implications brought about by human impact (ingress of Pb, Zn, Cd and other elements derived from anthropogenic sources). However, the effect of blending of anthropogenic and natural (geogene) signals in the upper soil horizons was already recognized during the mapping campaigns having steered the further research toward identifying geological imprint on the soil geochemical signature. Accordingly, this work was also aimed at finding the appropriate avenues to understanding how both signals behave in different cases, namely with and without directly referring to the regional bedrock geology. Using suitable statistical techniques (posterior probabilities from discriminant function analysis (DFA)) it was found that anthropogenic signal may be completely obliterated by the geogenic one at a larger, regional, scale, which is otherwise locally strong and adversely affects the environment (e.g. PHE with regard to the Drava River).
