Sažetak
Prevalence and aetiology of sub clinical mastitis in goats that were seropositive to caprine arthritis encephalitis virus, was investigated on 543 goats of French alpine breed on five farms in Croatia. The goats were kept in conditions of intensive production and were milked 2 times a day by machine. Presence of clinical arthritis was diagnosed by physical examination. Virus was diagnosed using serological immunoenzime test CHEKIT CAEV/MVV (IDEXX, Switzerland). Pathogen bacteria were isolated from milk samples of each udder half. Data were cross classified in a two- way contingency tables and association was measured using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact test. Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus was serologically confirmed in 50, 8 % of goats of which 21, 9% were also expressing physical symptoms of arthritis. 9, 6% of the whole sample had clinical arthritis recorded, but CAEV was not confirmed. Sub clinical mastitis was diagnosed in 29, 2% with CAEV concuring cases, and 67, 2% of the whole examined sample. 23, 2% of the goats examined were mastitis positive and free of the virus. Coagulasa negative staphylococci (Staphylococcus spp.) were isolated as cause of sub clinical mastitis in more that 25% of examined samples, while other pathogen bacteria that cause sub clinical mastitis were present in less than 4% of cases, and by line: Streptococcus D, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia coli. Statistical tests confirmed contingency between sub clinical mastitis and serologically confirmed arthritis in examined number of samples, with Phi coefficient of 0, 25 (P < 0, 0001). Our results indicate that the introduction of an eradication programmes for CAEV could also result in decreasing prevalence of sub clinical mastitis.
