Sažetak
This paper aims to explore the influence and reception of Digulleville’s allegory of human life as a pilgrimage in Croatian renaissance literature, looking in particular for possible contents borrowings from Pèlerinage de la vie humaine. The analysis of Digulleville’s influence on Vetrani will focus on the motifs belonging to the traditional inventory of allegorising journeys: the forking paths, allegorical monstrosity, iconography of vices- and-virtues and the importance of personifications abetting or assailing the pilgrim. Just like Pèlerinage de la vie humaine, The Pilgrim is a mysterious work that the modern reader has problems comprehending. In Vetrani’s poem one finds grotesque and fantastic elements, the motif of memory, as well as various temptations and traps the pilgrim encounters on his journey, but his pilgrim likewise searches for universale bonum. One can recognise the Benedictine (Cistercian) theology as the backdrop for The Pilgrim in the transformative spiritual effects of the allegorical journey, but the entwining of secular allegory of love and the religious, moral, allegory should also be noted. Finally, exploring various aspects of the influence, circulation, and reception of Digulleville’s work in Croatian 16th century literature might help delineate the wider European context of the basic allegorical subject – vita hominis peregrinatio – and indicate the possible transformations in the poetics of allegory and description of journeys in renaissance culture.
