Sažetak
Dermatomycoses are some of the most frequent dermatoses in clinical practice.
Dermatology is a specialty in which the visual aspect of disease is predominant.
Two of the most famous illustrators in the history of dermatological iconography are Dr. Anton Elfinger (1821-1864) and Dr. Carl Heitzmann (1836-1896), the painters of Ferdinand Hebra´s atlas of diseases of the skin 1856-1876. Heitzmann was born in Vinkovci in Slavonia, i.e. Croatia of today and therefore is part of the Croatian National Heritage. Details of his vita, oeuvre and family history will be discussed.
Several dozens of watercolors of both artists and of Julius Heitzmann, Carl´s younger brother are addressed and (in part) shown, to describe the artistic and medical characteristics of these paintings, the originals of which are preserved in the Vienna Institute. For comparison, paintings of other contemporary atlases of dermatology are displayed, e.g. Marie-Nicolas Devergie (1826, 1833), Erasmus Wilson (1855); Jonathan Hutchinson (....) and Moriz Kaposi (1898, 1900).
Artists illustrations of diseases prove to be superior to a type of photography because a painters brush is able to emphasize and highlight clinical details not apparent in photographs.
