Sažetak
Generally accepted method of international standard organization ISO 8672 Air Quality-Determination of the number concentration of airborne inorganic fibers by phase contrast optical microscopy - Membrane filter method, does not anticipated distinction between different fiber types. The problem could be resolved by using polarized light microscopy (PLM), UV fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy (scanning - SEM or transmission - TEM). Under the polarized light asbestos fibers show unique optical properties, that is, morphology, color, pleochroism, birefringence, extinction angle, sign of elongation, dispersion and refractive indices. Using standardized methodology 87 MDHS HSL - HSE (Methods for the Determination of Hazardous Substances, Health and Safety Laboratory Health and Safety Executive, UK) “Fibers in air ; Guidance on the discrimination between fiber types in samples of airborne dust on filters using microscopy” it is possible to distinguish asbestos from non-asbestos fibers. According to the HRN EN ISO/IEC 17025, quality of results obtained by these laboratory procedures are maintained through implementation of internal monitoring measures at the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health, Zagreb. Also, an external quality control has been regularly performing within the framework of inter-laboratory comparative process i.e., Regular Interlaboratory Counting Exchange-RICE (HSL - HSE, UK) by comparing the internal measurement results with the external ones. Concentration results of respirable total and asbestos fibers in the air collected from the former asbestos processing factory were compared. Concentration of total and asbestos fibers was determined by light microscopy PCM/PLM and SEM methodology. The differences between obtained results were not statistically significant. Therefore, it can be concluded that the PCM/PLM microscopic methodology is reliable primary step for concentration determination and differentiation of inorganic fibers in the air.
