Sažetak
Paper deals with the conversion of former brownfield areas in Vienna and Zagreb. In the first part of the paper process of deindustrialisation in European cities and post – socialist cities is explained through explanation of similarities and differences of the process in Vienna and Zagreb. In the second part of the paper definition of industrial heritage is given followed by a description and explanation of the processes of conversion. In the third part of the paper location of brownfield areas in Zagreb and Vienna are analysed. Areas are evaluated in the context of urban development and possibility of increase in life quality. In the last part of the paper two case studies, Kabelwerk form Vienna, and Tobacco factory Zagreb from Zagreb are presented comparing and explaining differences in revitalization strategies and dynamics. Paper concludes with the synthesis and analysis of main actors in the brownfield conversion and their development strategies, causes for different dynamics in Vienna and Zagreb and lessons learned for both cities.
