Sažetak
A well-educated and skilled population is essential to the efficient creation, acquisition, dissemination and utilization of relevant knowledge. In order to satisfy the growing demands of a knowledge economy, people have to be involved in lifelong learning. This article analyses the importance of human capital on a sample of developed countries. Based on empirical cross-sectional research carried out, we have established a statistically significant correlation between the quality of workforce and economic development in developed countries. The quality of the workforce is essentially determined by the extent of staff training. In this sense, Croatia lags significantly behind the developed countries. This is especially the case in the hospitality industry in Croatia. HRM and its processes should facilitate the management of knowledge and human capital through education, human capital development, cooperation and team work, etc. Research, however, has shown that HRM initiatives in Croatian hotel industry are not developed well enough. Consequently there contribution to economic development and formation of knowledge-based industry is not as high as it would be if efficiently implemented.
