Sažetak
Background: Genotoxicity of hydrogen peroxide is the result of free radical formation which can damage intracellular structures. The purpose was to investigate a possible genotoxic effect of two bleaching products. Methods: The research was conducted on 21 subjects divided into two groups. Group 1 used Zoom2 and group 2 Opalescence Boost bleaching agent. Specimens of the gingival area and the upper lip mucosa were taken just before, immediately after and 72 hours after the procedure and were analyzed using micronucleus test. Results: 72 hours after bleaching samples collected from the gingiva (Zoom2) and lip and gingiva (Boost) showed statistically significant increase (p<0.05) of the total number of MN while samples from gingiva (Boost) had increase of number of cells with 3+ MN. Lip samples (Zoom2) showed no increase of genotoxicity markers. Conclusion: Both preparations showed the potential genotoxic effect. Bleaching can affect the genome of mucosal cells to a certain extent, but it is difficult to assess clinical significance of these findings. Clinical implications: Statistically significant increase of genotoxicity markers were relatively small in amount and since oral mucosa cells have short lifespan, one-time exposure to mild genotoxic noxa probably has negligible carcinogenic potential. Key words: tooth bleaching, hydrogen peroxide, genotoxicity test, micronucleus test.
